Sustainable Cities

We are heading for a biodiversity crisis – the number of species on Earth is declining at an alarming rate and the consequences for humanity could be dire.

The lack of variety of species in cities is of particular concern as developers concrete over the last urban green spaces, and areas with a wide diversity of species are replanted with a single species of tree chosen by urban planners.

Natural Solutions is searching for digital solutions to this biodiversity crisis, and is developing a range of digital tools to allow urban planners, ecologists, and citizen scientists to geolocalise, catalogue, and interact with the biodiversity of their cities.

The team at Natural Solutions challenged me to deliver a set of images for their communications campaign which showed what ‘biodiversity’ could mean in an urban context.

This urban biodiversity could have been species chosen by man – for example trees planted in parks – or could be plant species which have naturally found their niche in the urban eco-system.
